Austin, so glad hearing idealistic discussions of what can and should be done to make our world a more prosperous, healthy, and good life for humanity. I have always appreciated your process of values clarification since I met you at BSC. Great discussion. I wonder if in order to bring "common sense" change that will bring prosperity and relational community to the world, we would have to clearly define the problem. It is hard to bring change and transformation if we do not see clearly the underlying problems and obstacles. It seems that it is statistically impossible for all the adverse attacks on humanity are all coincidence without malevolent intent. This question is philosophical and speculative endeavor to be sure, but maybe one that has to be addressed in order to find solutions.

2ft rise...measured from where..? And 'why' 2 foot ?
Bro is it safe to have that arch without any support. I mean if we increase the height of the arch to lets say 5 ft is it gonna hold
Yep arches are incredible efficient! Strength through geometry.
my favourite quote from Chuck Mahorn is that civil engineers should not be allowed to make moral judgements. we have to separately decide as a collective (borough, city, state whatever) what are the priorities, and non-negotiables, and guidelines. The engineer will always find a solution, but the engineer cannot in his capacity as engineer also be the decider of what the scope is for the solution. This is even true in a retail store hiring IT support. No body let’s the computer engineers define the scope. Every business defines the scope and the engineers create the solutions.
100%! Reminds us of Steve Jobs and Apple: start with user experience and then back into the hardware
Liability; personal, corporate or legal. Somebody said something about surrendering freedoms for safety.
What the bananas is this woman saying?
Listen to the episode and find out!
Do brick homes have an inner and an outer layer of bricks with space between?
Depends on how you build! This one does
Thats ugly to me
To each his own
Those vaulted floors looks very nice, but for me, they are more an academic solution for an academic problem. There are already flooring systems that safe material, i.e. BubbleDeck. Even a precast half slab (with open reinforcement) turned upside down will save you a lot of material (concrete). More material can be saved if the floors have moment resisting connections with the columns.
No doubt there is an HOA that no one can afford
Beautiful homes but too close together for me
I've just purchased my first home. My house is made ENTIRELY of brick, brick interior and exterior walls. The garage walls are made of glazed brick.
Is the exposed brick an issue for cold weather?
What is the foundation made out of
Does anybody legit build with bricks anymore? My dream is to make a 14ftx14ft brick storage/garden shed in the back yard. Brick architecture just looks so classy. To me at least.
Very interesting topic, but would probably have been better as a presentation with lots of illustrations, rather than just a couple of talking heads. Perhaps you could do something more accessible when you make you big NY announcement? Looking forward to more developments.
Have you listened to full episode?
@@BuildingCulture - I would love to if I had more time, but there are so many rapid developments going on at the moment, it is difficult to devote a full hour to one niche subject. Any chance of a TLDR?
DONT REMOVE THE SAFETY GUIRD OF YOUR GRINDER. IF THE ROTATING BLADE BRAKES, IT CAN HARM YOU BADLY.
That’s why we have safety gear on
I absolutely love love your work and your team’s work!! Do you need an intern?!
Appreciate it! Can’t take any right now, but reach out in a year or two
Can you tell me what that type of block is called? Im from Mcalester, Oklahoma and regular brick and cinder blocks is all i have been seeing
Ai is so disruptive that it will take the elementary school-aged children of today to grow up playing with the technology to truly unlock the engineering potential of tomorrow.
embrace ai? the sagrada familia, casa milà, Hallgrimskirkjaíð- was it ai or man which wrought their splendor? ai does not iterate, but palidly imitates the majesty which with we are already in faculty of. it is a foul mockery of wonder. your further desire to alienate humanity from the world we live in, the buildings we trespass, is the hubris which is punished by the nemesis of the steinway tower and all of its cancerous ilk.
Woah. You should definitely listen to full episode. You are assuming a lot here. We believe in human driven design. The world we live in is not. We’d love to bring back the building of great architecture. Sagrada Familia is one of my (Austin) first inspirations. But we cannot build like that today because. Trust me. We want to, and try, and are hindered by costs. AI and robots can literally help us bring those costs down carving stone-conceived, designed and finished by humans-in the service of great, lasting architecture. If we don’t embrace it? You’ll never see great architecture again at any scale, as we haven’t for the past 100 years. Of course it can be used poorly. As can all tech. But there are huge opportunities, too
Very interesting.
Full episode is worth a listen!
Im already imagine how it’ll look during the winter with the Christmas tree with the fireplace on
Gonna be awesome!!

insane how quality of everything is so shit now yet costs the same or more. Joke society
Truly
isnt gypsum cancerous
Nothing inherently toxic, but don’t want to breath silica dust. Just like lime.
On the original model, the buildings seem to look a lot different from what they are now, the old ones had red roofs and looked like older structures, are y’all going to morph into that style as you get closer to the Ferris wheel, or are y’all going to keep the same colorful style? Because I’m fine with either one, but there are some buildings in the old model that I would want to see, there are some buildings that looked like town halls, they had nice crafted designs, I would like to see those buildings happen, maybe you could mix up the style, keep the same almost victorian design of the old one, but color it like the new design.
We are not the developer so I’m not sure what they have planned. We are just building within the neighborhood!
Do you guys build in western NY?
Unfortunately we do not!
Which software are you use?
Sketchup
Why do none of give detail....it's the emperors cloths

It’s great to see there are still beautiful buildings being built.

Trammel rod attached to router works best
Sounds like you know who to vote for in November.
The brick work is literally fantastic. (quick secret , butcher blocks are supposed to be thin strips of wood glued together-with just an oil for finish-if its actually going to be used as a functional butchers block. more rustic feel and finish, but in theory, itll be chopped on, messed on, scratched, burned and all the rest-a 'patina' over time :))
True butcher block is end grain.
Have done that, but also like custom red oak! A lot of those butcher blocks are just pre made out of oak, so we are just making custom and bigger size which looks cooler in our opinion!
I bet it feels good knowing that these homes you're building will still be standing strong, hundreds of years in the future. Great stuff!
Thanks!
